The Routes Come join us on another Saddle Up Sunday. This week we'll start in Battersea. The routes include two of the club's favourite roads in the region - Burnt Hills Rd and Battersea Rd.

  • Short Route This route is an out and back on Burnt Hills Road up to Seeley's Bay. There will be a break in Seeley's Bay at Ridgeway Confections where you may wish to try one of their summer specials - a "Frosticle"! Burnt Hills Road is super scenic. However, it's also somewhat hilly in places. Thus, this weeks' short route is a bit shorter than usual.
  • Medium Route The medium route this week goes out on the wonderfully scenic Burnt Hills Rd, takes a break at the locks at Jones Falls, and then returns on the Battersea Rd.
  • Long and Extra Long Routes The long and extra long routes add additional loops to the medium route. This means that an extra long route rider could easily bail onto the long route. Similarly, a long route rider rider could easily bail onto the medium route.
To see how the above four routes relate to each other, open this page on your desktop, click on the "RWGPS Route Links" button above, and then click on the "Show all on map" button.

Smoke Situation Update There are three sites that we suggest that you look at:
  • to understand the smoke situation in the Kingston area, go to Ontario's Air Quality Forecast
  • to understand how this forecast may affect you personally, click here
  • to see a neat graphic of the smoke situation in north eastern North America, click here
Based on the above information, we are currently planning to proceed with Sunday's ride. However, things could still change and you should obviously take your personal circumstances into account in deciding whether to participate.

Road Construction The medium, long and extra long routes have a section under construction near the south end of the Battersea Rd part of the routes. The township is upgrading/resurfacing this road in 3 to 5 kilometre sections over the next two years. The road is still quite passable. However, folks on less robust high speed road tires may be a bit uncomfortable.

Pace Groups When registering, be sure to indicate your preferred pace group:

  • the short and medium routes will generally be ridden at a D or C pace
  • the long and extra long routes will generally be ridden at a B or A pace

After Ride Refreshments  After the ride, The Creekside Bar & Grill will welcome us for lunch or other refreshments.

Ride Preparation Riders should be familiar with Ontario's Safe Cycling Guidelines, and bring the following with them on the ride:

  • a cell phone (if available), with the app "what3words" installed
  • a copy of the ride route (downloaded to a mobile device or printed)
  • a spare tube, pump and repair kit
  • sufficient hydration and nutrition
  • health card
  • document showing address and emergency contact information
The Saddle up Sundays Program Saddle Up Sundays aims to offer a Sunday cycling outing for all levels of riders on a varied collection of the most scenic and the safest country roads close to Kingston. The rides include stops at the best coffee shops along the way, and finish up with refreshments at some great restaurants. We’re a work in progress, so please feel free to suggest modifications to our program.
