The Routes We're relaunching the gravel rides program as described below. This week's outing will go through a lovely mix of farm and forest in Rideau Lakes Township.

Why a Relaunch?  We've had some great comments this season about our gravel rides program. In response to those comments, we're going to make the following changes to the program:

  • the program will now be on Wednesdays (Gravel Wednesdays!), not Tuesdays. This means the Club will now be offering morning rides on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We think that this will a good balanced schedule
  • most of the time we'll offer a true short route (typically 40 to 52 km), as well as a longer route
  • the "goat path" sections will be eliminated (although not by unanimous vote!). However, we'll still be exploring interesting and quiet roads and trails not generally accessible on a road bike
  • the starting locations for the gravel rides will generally be closer to Kingston then previously. With limited exceptions, there will no longer be long drives to places like Tamworth, Sharbot Lake or Westport
  • a number of the routes will be a mix of stretches on the Cataraqui or K&P Trails, and sections on neighboring quiet country roads ("Two Worlds Routes")
There's still two months left in the season. We look forward to welcoming some new additions to the gravel growling crew!

Parking and Post Ride Refreshments We'll be parking at Petra's Place just outside Lyndhurst. Please park at the perimeter of the lot so as leave easy access for other folks coming into Petra's just for refreshments. After the ride, consider enjoying Petra's hospitality and staying for lunch.

Equipment  You don't need need a fancy new $10,000 bike for gravel riding. It's really only the tire width that matters. 35-40 mm will be perfect. However, anything wider than 32 mm will generally be fine.

Ride Preparation You
should also be familiar with Ontario's Safe Cycling Guidelines, and bring the following with you on the ride:

  • a cell phone, with the app "what3words" installed
  • a copy of the ride route (downloaded to a mobile device or printed)
  • a spare tube, pump and repair kit
  • sufficient hydration and nutrition
  • health card
  • document showing address and emergency contact information
